Future Leaders Social Action
At the beginning of the year the we tasked all YWCA Auckland Future Leaders Programme groups with a give back challenge - all groups were to plan and run a social community giveback project. This was to be completely self-led and directed, with YWCA staff leaving the students to plan and manage all aspects of their chosen giveback.
After many discussions, debates, and brainstorming session, the Future Leaders at Henderson High School decided to hold an event within the school to raise awareness and educate fellow students about the environment and developing countries. They would do this by putting on a series of eco-friendly and sustainability themed fun activities during the school's lunch time. It took them a significant amount of work; right from deciding what they wanted to do, when, where and why, to pulling together budgets, proposals for their school, organizing sponsors and volunteers, posters, holding a bake sale to raise money to fund the fun day and even reaching out to organizations such as World Vision and Zeal West. Our Future Leaders worked on their project for 3 months and hosted the fun day in late July.
The day was a complete success. They pulled in volunteers from all over the school to help. There was great energy as students took part in the activities, competing to win gift packs with sustainable products, and donating goods and funds to the cause. We are extremely proud of both how hard they worked and how well they pulled this all together.
Special thanks to Henderson High School and to all those organisations who contributed goods for the event including World Vision, Ecostore, Vegeware and Just Crafting.
